Infinite Monkeys looking for writers

The Infinite Monkeys Writers Group meets monthly to share flash fiction stories all written around the same prompt. The goal of the meetings will be to discuss what worked in the stories, what didn’t, how it could work better; simple light-hearted fun conversation about writing.

All stories must be flash fiction format, 55 to 1000 words, no more, no less. In the story, characters should be developed, a plot must unfold, and each word has to be chosen carefully, only the most effective can be used.

Hatched in Detroit: A Traveling Show

HATCH is putting together a traveling exhibit this year and we want you to be a part of it!

WHO:
Entries will be accepted from Hatch members only. However, we're always looking for new members: if you know an artist who should be part of our show and our group, we strongly encourage you to invite them! New members can send their entries along with their membership applications. Applications and other membership details are available athttp://www.hatchart.org/joindonate.html

WHAT:
To keep shipping costs down, this show will consist of lightweight 2-dimensional work. Dimensions should be no greater than 25"x25" and no thicker than 1". Print editions are welcome. Unframed, poster-style presentation is encouraged; otherwise, the work should be ready to hang out of the shipping box and use no glass.

WHERE:
4 or 5 venues across North America -- private galleries, college galleries, non-profit galleries; we won't rule out any respectable place. Once the show is curated, we'll shop it around and develop a list of destinations.

HOW LONG:
Have it travel for a year to a year and a half. Since many galleries book well in advance, there is a chance that the show will not hit the road for several months and extend well into 2011.

HOW MUCH:
There is no entry fee. Hatch hopes to get assistance from the galleries with shipping expenses and is also seeking grant money for this purpose. If these methods prove to be unfruitful, we may request a small commission or shipping fee (around $20) from accepted artists.

SALES:
All work should be for sale. If an original sells at one venue, it will need to be replaced with another similar work, either by the original artist or an alternate. If an edition sells, the one with the show can remain and the artist can ship anto the buyer. The galleries will probably charge a commission, so price accordingly.

ENTRY PROCEDURE:
Entries will be judged by Hatch board members from digital images. Images should be about 800x600 pixels at 72dpi. Include your name in the digital file name. In the body of your message, include the following information about each entered work:

pictureRoute66 follows the travels of Canadian photographer Sandi Wheaton as she journeys along Route 66, capturing it on beautiful-but-now-obsolete Kodak black and white infrared film. At the same time, she is shooting digital stills from her car dash every few seconds, that will ultimately be combined into one time-lapse video documenting the length of Route 66.

Unfiltered, a celebration of outsider art curated by Mike Kelly, runs from July 11 - August 22, 2009 at Detroit Industrial Projects, 1610 Clay Avenue, Second Building, Third Floor, Detroit. Saturday 1-5pm or by appointment.

This month's Featured Artist in Detroit Artists Market's Elements Gallery (4719 Woodward Avenue, Detroit) is Carl Oxley III. Carl will be exhibiting a new LARGE piece entitled "HAMTRAMCK". In this new series of works, drawing inspiration from graphic novels, ancient hieroglyphs and pictographs, Oxley pushes forward from the single character image, dividing the panel into multiple scenes telling a larger story.

Hatch member Aaron Trudgeon and No Fun Films are having a free double-feature screening of their film, After the Blood Rush as well as a behind-the-scenes movie at the Dragonmead Microbrewery in Warren. The screening is Sunday, October 26th and begins at 7pm sharp. As you may know, After the Blood Rush, is set in Hamtramck and was partially shot in our newly acquired building. And if you're not familiar with Dragonmead, they recently won a gold medal in the 2008 World Beer Cup for Best English-style Mild Ale with their beer, Crusader Dark Mild Ale. So grab some friends, have a pint and come watch vampires terrorize Hamtramck. Check out the trailer here.

Directions: 2739 Edwin is just West of Joseph Campau, and 4 blocks North of Holbrook. There is public parking on Joseph Campau, and various other locations including 2 lots just North of the building.

Frank English and Clinton Snider are Detroit area artists who have made extensive use of landscape to examine issues of social, environmental and personal transformation. Working primarily in South East Michigan, and utilizing a variety of mediums, they have each produced bodies of work that are beautifully realized and approachable, but which defy easy analysis.

In this, their first joint show, and their first noteworthy period of interaction since graduating from CCS, they will present current work alongside selected older works of particular personal significance. Integral to the show is the process of re-engaging with each others work, and the consequent reflection on the individual bodies of work.

Hatch is currently accepting submissions for its next exhibit, WSG: Fake Flyers for Fake Gigs.

Starting Sunday, August 24 and throughout the month of September, Hamtramck's Cafe 1923 will be playing bulletin board to a growing collection of outlandish concert flyers, posters, and handbills; and we want YOUR designs!

Submit as many designs as you want. The flyer must promote an imaginary event. Imaginary acts and venues are preferred; please don't use this exhibit to promote your own or upcoming show (besides, we know you have a great idea for band name -- here's your chance to use it). Concert flyers are our focus, but all sorts of flyers (yard sales, lost pet, etc.) will be accepted, as long as they RAWK.

Size/Format: 11" X 17" or smaller. Printouts and photocopies preferred: send originals at your own risk, they will not be returned. We will be treating these like actual flyers. They will be subject to tearing, staple damage, or may be partially covered over as the weeks go on.

How to submit: On Sunday, August 24, 10 am - noon, bring submissions in person to Cafe 1923, 2287 Holbrook Street, Hamtramck. We will be hanging on that day.

Pinwheel Bakery will be showing new paintings by Hamtramck-based artist Carl Oxley III from mid-July through mid-August. The show kicks off with an opening reception on Thursday, July 17 from 5 - 9pm (as part of Ferndale's summer late-night Thursdays). The bakery will be selling special hand-decorated Oxley-designed sugar cookies for the event.

Jide Aje is participating in the 2008 Ben Franklin Project, currently at 555 Gallery . The popular format, the $100 art has long demonstrated its success in bringing together potential, first and old-timer art collectors with long-time and emerging artists, longing to clear their bins of small, yet promising examples of their work.

The exhibition will run the duration of one week and end with a closing reception on Saturday, July 19, at 7:00pm.

After two years of talking, planning, dreaming and hoping, Hatch may finally have a home. Last night the Hamtramck City Council unanimously approved a resolution to grant Hatch a one-year site option on the former police station so we can purchase the building for one dollar. We have one year to raise enough money to make the building operable. Thanks to all of you that turned out for support!

This is exciting both for Hatch and for Hamtramck, which will reap the benefits of having an art center along with the positive image of a progressive city that takes bold moves to support art and culture. The media has taken note, so watch for stories on Hatch in print and on air.

The next step is ours to take. We will be applying for a number of grants and will begin an aggressive fundraising campaign. Hatch will need you to both help and contribute. More than ever we will need volunteers to keep this groundswell of progress moving forward. We will be mailing out a document that will list the things that you can do for Hatch and the things that Hatch can do for you. It will also be placed on the website if we do not have your mailing address.

Personally I would like to thank all of you who have done so much for Hatch. This has been a group effort and it will continue to be. Those of you who have been hoping to get involved or have been thinking about joining, now is the perfect time. You can be a part of something positive, exciting and homespun.

HATCHBACK is our second juried art exhibit and sale, following our successful "coming-out" show, HATCHED!, last March and several other exciting exhibits since. It will be held at Hamtramck's de facto arts HQ, Cafe 1923, with opening night party on the weekend of the Hamtramck Blowout that will feature live music and a Dr. Sketchy drawing session.
